# Replacing Products in SpecPlanner
> Learn how to substitute a product in your specifications

## Replacing Products in SpecPlanner
Replace a product in your specifications with a different one from the Acelab catalog. The replacement happens in-place — the product's row position, custom field values, notes, and quantities are all preserved.

## Before You Begin
* You must be a project **Admin**, **Creator**, or **Editor** to replace products.
* Replace Product is available for any product row that has a product assigned. It is not available on empty rows.
* Replace mode searches the **global Acelab catalog only**. You cannot replace a product with a Custom Product — if you need to swap in something that isn't in the catalog, remove the current product and add a Custom Product instead.

## How to Replace a Product
**From SpecPlanner:**
1. Locate the product you want to replace.
2. Click the **three dots (⋮)** to the right of the product row. Select **Replace Product**.
3. The **Explore Products** modal opens in Replace mode. The header shows which product you're replacing.
4. Search by keyword and use the **Category** and **Manufacturer** filters to find the replacement.
5. Select the product you want to use. Only one product can be selected at a time.
6. Click **Replace Product** to confirm.
**From Schedules:**
1. Right-click the product row you want to replace.
2. Select **Replace Product** from the context menu.
3. Follow steps 4–6 above.

## What Happens Next
* The replacement product appears in the same MasterFormat section where the original was placed, regardless of the replacement product's default section in the Acelab catalog.
* The row stays in its current position — it does not move or reorder.
* Custom field values, notes, and quantities on the row are preserved.
* The product is updated in Schedules automatically, and the MasterFormat section field in Schedules reflects the placement from SpecPlanner.
**Note:** The original product is removed from both SpecPlanner and Schedules and replaced by the new product.

## Example
You have a limestone veneer in section **09 70 00 – Wall Finishes**. You replace it with a hardwood plank flooring product whose default catalog section is **09 62 48 – Acoustic Flooring**. Because you initiated the replacement from section 09 70 00, the hardwood product appears under **09 70 00 – Wall Finishes** in SpecPlanner, and the MasterFormat section field in Schedules displays **09 70 00**.
