# Smart Fields

> Insert live company, project, and product data into your Smart Doc using Identity, Project, and Product fields.

**Smart Fields** are live data placeholders you drop onto a Smart Doc page. Instead of typing values like a manufacturer name or project number by hand, you insert the field, and the value fills in from your company profile, project, or product record. When the underlying data changes, the field updates in your document automatically.

Smart Fields are organized into three tabs in the left rail: **Identity**, **Project**, and **Product**.

## Inserting a Smart Field

1. Open a Smart Doc and select the page you want to edit.
2. In the left rail, open the **Smart Fields** drawer.
3. Switch between the **Identity**, **Project**, and **Product** tabs to find the field.
4. Click the **+** next to a field, or drag it onto the canvas.
5. Use the **Field Properties Panel** on the right to adjust label, format, and styling.

## Identity Fields

**Identity** fields resolve to your company's data. They're the same across every project and every product in every document your firm produces.

Use Identity fields for content that represents your firm on a deliverable:

* Company name
* Company address
* Company phone number
* Company email
* Company website
* Company logo

Identity fields are managed on your company profile. Update a value there and every Smart Doc that uses it updates too.

**Best for:** cover sheets, letterheads, footers, contact blocks, sign-off pages.

## Project Fields

**Project** fields resolve to the current project's data. They change from one project to the next, but stay the same across every page of a Smart Doc within that project.

Use Project fields for content that identifies the project on a deliverable:

* Project name
* Project number
* Project address
* Client name
* Project team members
* Project dates
* Any custom project fields your firm has defined

Project fields pull from the project's settings and metadata. Custom project fields your firm has added show up here too.

<Note>
  Some Project fields are marked "Coming Soon" and aren't available yet. Available Project fields insert as normal.
</Note>

**Best for:** cover pages, headers and footers, submittal transmittal pages, project info blocks.

## Product Fields

**Product** fields resolve to the data on a specific product. Unlike Identity and Project fields, Product fields are context-aware: the value depends on which product's page you're on inside a [Reference Binder](/help-center/working-on-projects/smart-docs-reference-binders).

Common Product fields:

* Manufacturer
* Product name
* Model number
* Product image
* Finish
* Lead time
* Warranty
* Section (MasterFormat)
* Any custom product fields defined on the schedule

### How Product Fields Resolve

* **Inside a Reference Binder:** each page in the binder is bound to one product row from the linked schedule. Product fields on that page resolve to that row's values. Page 1 shows page 1's product, page 2 shows page 2's product, and so on.
* **On a Loose Page or in a Custom Binder:** Product fields don't have a per-page product context. You'll be prompted to pick a specific product to bind the field to.
* **If a product is missing a value** for a Product field, the field renders empty on that product's page.

**Best for:** product cutsheet pages, submittal pages, spec sheet templates.

## Formatting and Styling Fields

Select any inserted field to open the **Field Properties Panel** on the right. From there you can:

* Change font, size, weight, color, and alignment.
* Show or hide the field **label**.
* Set a **fallback value** to display when the source field is empty.
* For image fields (like Product Image, Company Logo), set size, fit, and aspect ratio.

Styling applies only to that instance of the field.

## Working With Fields in Templates

Smart Fields are saved as part of a [Page Template](/help-center/working-on-projects/smart-docs-page-templates). When the template is applied inside a Reference Binder, Product fields automatically bind to that binder's schedule. This is what makes cutsheet and submittal templates reusable across projects.
