Document Elements are the building blocks you place on a Smart Doc page. They’re the static and semi-static pieces, headings, body copy, images, tables, checklists, dividers, page numbers, and form fields, that hold your document together alongside Smart Fields and Smart Schedules.

Inserting an Element

  1. Open a Smart Doc and select the page you want to edit.
  2. In the left rail, open the Smart Doc Elements drawer.
  3. Click the + next to an element (or drag it onto the canvas).
  4. Select the element on the canvas to open the Element Inspector on the right for styling and configuration.
All elements can be dragged, resized, duplicated, and deleted from the canvas.

Available Elements

Text

Rich-text block for headings, body copy, notes, and captions.
  • Set font, size, weight, color, alignment, and line spacing.
  • Supports bold, italic, underline, lists, and links.
  • Resizes to fit its content, or set a fixed size from the inspector.
Best for: section titles, paragraphs, disclaimers, captions.

Textbox

A text container with a fixed frame. Unlike a plain Text element, a Textbox has its own background, border, and padding, useful for callouts and boxed notes.
  • Set background color, border, corner radius, and padding.
  • Text inside the box supports the same formatting as a Text element.
Best for: callout boxes, sidebars, highlighted notes.

Checkbox / Checklist

Insert a single checkbox or a checklist with multiple items.
  • Add, remove, and reorder items.
  • Toggle items as checked or unchecked in the design view for a pre-checked deliverable, or leave blank as a template for reviewers.
  • Set text formatting and spacing between items.
Best for: submittal review checklists, approval blocks, QA/QC lists.

Table

A standalone table you build by hand (separate from Smart Schedule).
  • Set rows and columns.
  • Edit cell contents directly, including Smart Fields inside cells.
  • Style borders, header row, alternating rows, cell padding, and text alignment.
  • Merge cells and set column widths.
Best for: manually authored tables that don’t come from a schedule, like keynotes, legends, or comparison tables.

Image

Upload an image or drop one onto the canvas.
  • Supports common raster formats.
  • Set size, aspect ratio, and fit (cover, contain, fill).
  • Add a border, corner radius, or drop shadow from the inspector.
Best for: logos, photography, drawings, screenshots, product hero images (when not bound as a Smart Field).

Divider

A horizontal or vertical line used to separate sections on a page.
  • Set thickness, color, and style (solid, dashed, dotted).
  • Drag the endpoints to resize.
Best for: section breaks, header underlines, visual separation between blocks.

Page Number

Inserts a page number that updates automatically as pages are added, reordered, or removed.
  • Choose format (e.g. 1, Page 1, 1 of 12).
  • Style like a Text element (font, size, color, alignment).
Best for: footers on submittals, specs, and long documents.

Form Field

A fillable field that captures input on the exported PDF or shared version of the document.
  • Choose type (single-line text, multi-line text, checkbox, signature).
  • Set label, placeholder, and required state.
  • Style the field frame and label.
Best for: approval blocks, reviewer sign-off, transmittal forms.

Aligning and Arranging Elements

  • Drag to reposition; use snapping guides to align with other elements.
  • Select multiple elements to align, distribute, or group them.
  • Use the layer controls in the inspector to bring elements forward or send them backward.
  • Hold the modifier key while dragging to constrain movement to one axis.

Copying Elements Across Pages

  • Copy and paste elements between pages, binders, and Smart Docs.
  • Save a full-page layout as a Page Template to reuse element arrangements across documents.
